"Where photography meets vision and vision meets soul."
Artist's Statement:
When pursuing the capture of images, it’s easy to imagine that photographers
(and visual artists of all genres) often go it alone in their quest for creatively-surprising
or unusual subjects. Early morning hours to catch sunrise, long treks to remote areas,
endless hours waiting for just the right light, etc., understandably tend to dissuade
many companions from tagging along. My particular solo flight often finds me
traveling across the country and globe as life's chapters unfold in most
unexpected ways. Key to the creation of all my images is an intimate and
personal relationship with atmosphere, fearlessness, and a balance of light and
shadow. Atmosphere, to me, is a sense of mood as elemental as air. It compels a
sense of discovery within mystery - not only about what's presented before you,
but also about yourself in relation. Fearlessness allows artistic freedom to
explore personal vision while nurturing adaptability when life's journey brings
unanticipated - and sometimes unwelcome - experiences. And finally, the balance
of light and shadow will always be as important to photography as it is in daily
existence. The unseen (shadow) is as crucial as the visible, and quite often far
more powerful. As a woman photographer, I often feel the challenges to
flying solo are increased. There is an inherent danger to going it alone, yet
the rewards are priceless in terms of personal growth, restoration of self, and
evolution as an artist and human being.
That said, none of us ever truly travels this world alone. We (thankfully) usually
have friends, family, partners, or mentors who encourage and inspire us to rise
above what even we think we can do on our own. Many of us have
belief in a higher power that guides our steps and infuses our art with deeper
meaning than we could present on our own. And those of us who exhibit and
sell can’t do with this without the incredible support of local arts
communities, galleries, other artists, educators, and visionaries.
Finally, taking all of this one step further, as a photographer who feels well-supported
by an incredible group of individuals, I feel a compelling urge to be of service to
my community (wherever I am found), volunteering art, time, energy and all
resources within my reach. Just as I feel great joy in artistic creation, so do I feel
great joy in sharing art and spirit in ways that hopefully help another person
who might also be on their own "solo" flight.
